Located in the Southern part of the United States, the state of Georgia is known for peaches, peanuts, and pecans. It has been given two nicknames, The Peach State and the Empire State of the South. Bordered by the U.S. states of Florida to the south, South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Alabama to the west, and Tennessee and North Carolina to the North, Georgia is one of America's first thirteen colonies that was involved in the American Revolution against the country of England. It was also the fourth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution and was a part of the Confederacy during America's Civil War.
The northern section of the state includes the southern edge of the
Great Smoky Mountain arm of the Appalachian Mountain range, with
its highest point being nearly 5,000 feet, so despite the state's
humid subtropical climate, there can be snow in the highest
elevations during the winter months. This climate allows for many
tropical plants and trees, such as palms, cypress, and palmettos on
the coastal areas and hardwoods such as oak and maples on the
inland regions. It also makes for a good habitat for tropical
reptiles such as salamanders, cottonmouth and copperhead snakes,
alligators, and frogs.
The largest city is its capital, Atlanta, which is located in the
Central part of the state and was home to the 1996 Olympic Summer
Games. Georgia has been home to several famous people including
former President Jimmy Carter, George Washington Carver, actress
Julia Roberts, and singer Kanye West, and media mogul, Ted
Turner.
Being that it is also a state rich in history, it contains many
historical sites such as Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military Park,
Andersonville Military Park, and Kennesaw Mountain National
Battlefield Park; as well as several protected natural areas,
including the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Chattahoochee
River National Recreation Area, and the Cumberland Island National
Seashore.
